Perge was one of the great cities of ancient Pamphylia. Today you can walk its main street from end to end and get a real sense of how big and busy it once was.
What you will see
- The Hellenistic gate: two round towers mark the old city entrance.
- The colonnaded street: a long main street lined with columns, with a water channel running down its middle.
- The Roman baths: you can still follow the route from the cold to the hot rooms.
- The stadium: one of the best-preserved stadiums in the region, just outside the walls.
Perge also has a place in early Christian history: the Book of Acts records that St Paul and Barnabas passed through the city on their first journey.
Many of the statues found here are now in the Antalya Museum, which makes a good second stop if you want to see them.
Tips for golfers
- The site is large and open, so go early on warm days.
- Allow two to three hours to walk the main street and visit the stadium.
- Perge and Aspendos are close to each other: many guests see both in one morning.
